Journal Entry 13: Movie Posters

Narnia poster. inside Walmart. Narnia uses a mystical old fashioned font. I think it works well the the theme. I have never really paid attention to fantasy type design before but it has some good things in it. I like the huge sweep from the R I would not think to do something like that.

Pirates of the Caribbean poster. My Living room. I really like this poster. (I guess thats why its in my living room.) I mostly like it because the images and the way they are put together. It all kind of mixes together to make one great image. I really like the type too. The curvy serifs look nice.

Tron Poster. Walmart. The font for the Tron logo is really nice. It fits the theme well The t making up half of the R works well. Overall this poster gives me a good Idea of what the movies is about

Journal Entry 12: wine bottles

Red splash. Found in Bashas. I really like this. This bottle was able to stand out and catch my attention. The red against the black just stand out. the type is a simple sans serif font I think I works especially at the bottom.

Relax wine bottle. Found in Bashas. This bottle stood out as well. Red really helps catch my attention when all of the other bottles are dark with biege. labels. This design looks really modern.

Tattinger champagne. Found in bashas. I really like this box. Its clean, simple, elegant. I like the simple red and white color scheme. I like how the name is on the side really big.

Journal Entry 11: Movie covers

Avatar cover. My apartment. I picked this because I am not too happy with them using Papyrus. this might be my least favorite font. Maybe because I see it about ten times a day on signs around Flagstaff. Papyrus is supposed to be an ancient Egyptian type of font. It wouldn't care about it as much if I didn't see it everyday.

Fellowship of the Ring. My apartment. I like the lord of the rings design. I like the font they used. The texture in the background is nice and fits the theme of the series.

Twilight eclipse. my apartment. I actually like the type used in this cover. The pointy P and the lines through is work well with the theme of the movie/book. The letters look like they are covering up the sun like an eclipse would I never noticed this until now.

Journal Entry 10: VC books

Fundamentals of Graphic Design Book. Found in my apartment. I picked this because I was looking at the cover of these books and decided it would be interesting to discuss. The first thing I notice on this book is the huge F. A picture of pages from a book is used for texture in the background. I don't really like it.

Graphic design solutions. found in my apartment. Another large letter on the cover. The book uses a simple black and white color scheme but it is effective as a cover. I like this better than the fundamentals cover. I also like how the type is arranged in the bottom right.

Typography book. Found in my apartment. Another large letter... maybe I should try it sometime. This cover uses bright colors with the yellow and red. I still think my favorite is the graphic design solutions book.

Journal Entry 9: Downtown Flag

Animas trading. Downtown Flag. I like the typeface used in this sign. It goes along with the theme of Animas. I like the sharp serifs. My initial reaction is that I see three strange A's sticking out.

Grand canyon store. Downtown Flag. I think the type at the top goes well with the grand canyon theme. I don't like the all caps bold sans serif on the the bottom half of the sign.

Old Town Shops. The type goes along withe the "old town" theme. It looks somewhat western like. The sign seems like it would be a sign for an old western bar.

Journal Entry 8: Advertisements

Dr pepper ad. On my door.  I chose this because I like the dr Pepper logo. I like the curve in the P in pepper. I am just now noticing that that can is really wet. I guess it makes it look more appealing.

Tecate ad. Downtown flag. This ad is effective  it is easy to see what the price is on the beer. the 2/$5 really sticks out. It looks like it was just tacket on though and isn't really visually appealing.

The Green. Downtown Flag. This ad caught my eye instantly. I love the colors and the shapes. The type is interesting I like how the r wraps around the e and how it all fits together.

Journal Entry 7: Graffiti

Blitz. Downtown Flagstaff. This isn't the best or even very interesting as far as graffiti goes. I like how the I was doted with the triangle. I also like how the underline has a little curve at the end.

Monkey holding a gun. Downtown Flag. Okay this doesn't actually have any typography in it, oh well I like it so I wanted to put it in. I like the monkey because the expression on the face. It shows that the monkey is scared (probably why he is pointing a gun at something)

Lunas. On a moving train? I like the shape of the letters. I also like the colors in the word on the right. Graffiti artist should start designing and selling type.

Journal Entry 6: Beer florescent signs

Budweiser. Downtown Flag. I chose this because it is so iconic and recognizable. The budweiser logo uses a simple script like font with the 6 sided shape behind it.

Dos Equis. Downtown Flag. Dos Equis is literally two x's for their logo. the two x's are more iconic than the actual writing Dos Equis. It seems like beer signs often use red to make it stand out.

Tecate. Downtown Flag. Tecate uses a block like font. the A brakes the line drawn by the top of the letters. I think that without it it would be too straight and boring.

Journal Entry 5: Florescent Signs

Bud Light Lime. Downtown Flag. I picked this because I like the use of colors. The designer changed the color of the but light logo to a bright green because it is but light lime.

Landshark Lager. Downtown Flag. I like the use of graphics in the background. Most florescent signs use mostly type. The type is also interesting. I am learning that a lot of signs use a script type font along with another.

Hotel Monte Vista. Downtown Flag. I picked this because it is one of the biggest signs downtown. The sign is a simple sans serif font. The use of red helps it stand out against the blue or black sky.

Journal Entry 4: Handwritten Signs

Coffee Cocktails. Downtown Flag. I picked this because each of the different coffee's have different typographical and graphic elements to emphasize what the coffee is about. Its very unique.

Happy Hour. Downtown Flag. Some of the coolest typography was on these handwritten signs. These signs were probably made by people who are not graphic designers, but sometimes they are better than the signs that were made by designers. I like the handwritten type at the top. I like that the two H's aren't exactly the same. Something that we don't see with computer generated type.

DeLovely cosmetic company. Downtown Flag. The use of bright colors on a black background helps these handwritten signs stand out. Unlike most handwritten signs this sign is very clean. the type is drawn very accurately. The elegant handwritten type fits with the cosmetic theme.

Journal Entry 3: Restaurant signs

The Black Bean sign. Found Downtown Flag. I picked this because the design fits the restaurant so well. The sign lets me know what type of restaurant it is at first glance. I typically don't like text thats too decorated but in this case it works

Flagstaff Berwing company. Found in Downtown Flagstaff. My initial reaction says that this restaurant/bar must be an old fashioned pub type of bar. It is a friendly welcoming design.

Pato Thai Restaurant. Found in downtown Flag. I picked this because it stood out from the other signs downtown. My initial reaction is that this is an elegant design. It uses a very decorated type and also a simple sans serif type.

Journal Entry 2: Car logos

Ford Logo. I chose this because it is so iconic. I found this on a car downtown. The ford logo hasn't changed much throughout history so it looks very old fashioned. It reminds me of the coca cola logo. They both use the same type.

The jeep logo. Found on a car downtown. The jeep logo is bold. Perhaps manly. jeep was created for the military and the logo reflects that.

The nissan logo. Found on a car downtown. The nissan logo looks modern. The logo makes me think that the company cares about being technologically advanced.

Journal Entry 1: Signs that tell you what to do

The DO NOT ENTER sign uses a bold sans serif font. This is right outside my apartment. I picked this because I see it every day. My reaction to this sign is that it is very assertive. It is almost offending since I see it everyday. It reminds me that I don't always have freedom.

Two hour parking only sign. This was found in downtown Flagstaff. It was picked because it is a commonly seen sign. The sign uses red against white so it will be easily read. People cant use the "I didn't see the sign" excuse to get out of a ticket.

Pet Waste sign. Found outside of my apartment. This sign is green. probably because it is an environmental sign? This small sign tells a lot of information so It uses a graphic to help the reader see what it is about with just a glance
